Thread: Doxycycline for Dogs - Dosage and Side Effects (Posted by WoofyWalker)

Post 1 - WoofyWalkerHi everyone! Im new here and hoping to get some advice. My dog, Max, was just prescribed doxycycline for a respiratory infection. Ive never given this medication before, so I have a few questions. How often should I give it to him? And are there any side effects I should watch out for?

Post 2 - DrVetRocksHello WoofyWalker! Welcome to the forum. Doxycycline is an antibiotic commonly used in dogs for various bacterial infections, including respiratory issues like kennel cough or pneumonia. The typical dosage is usually once daily at around 5 mg per pound of body weight. However, it's essential to follow your veterinarians specific instructions as dosages can vary depending on the severity of the infection and the type of bacteria involved.

Post 3 - WoofyWalkerThanks DrVetRocks! That's really helpful. Max weighs about 40 pounds, so that would mean around 200 mg daily, right? Also, when should I expect to see improvement in his condition?

Post 4 - DrVetRocksYes, thats correct! For a 40-pound dog, the dosage would indeed be approximately 200 mg once a day. It's important to give it with food as this helps reduce stomach upset and increases absorption. As for improvement, you should typically see some signs of recovery within a few days to a week, but make sure he completes the full course of antibiotics even if symptoms subside early.

Post 5 - WoofyWalkerGot it! Once daily with food. And how long is the typical treatment duration? Is there anything special I need to do during this time?

Post 6 - DrVetRocksThe treatment duration can vary but usually ranges from 7-14 days, depending on your dogs condition and response to the medication. During this period, ensure Max gets plenty of rest and maintains proper hydration. Keep an eye out for any side effects like vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite. If you notice these signs, contact your vet right away.

Post 7 - WoofyWalkerThanks so much! One last thing: can I give him treats during this time? Or should I stick strictly to his regular diet?

Post 8 - DrVetRocksYoure welcome! As long as Max is tolerating the medication well, theres no need to restrict treats completely. However, try to keep them mild and in moderation. Focus on maintaining a balanced diet that supports his health during this treatment period. If he has any digestive issues while taking doxycycline, it might be best to stick close to his regular food.

Post 9 - WoofyWalkerPerfect! Ill make sure Max gets lots of love and attention too. Thanks for all the advice, DrVetRocks!

Post 10 - DrVetRocksYoure very welcome! Doxycycline should help him recover nicely. If you have any more questions or concerns as he goes through treatment, feel free to post them here or reach out directly to your vet for personalized advice. Wishing Max a speedy recovery!

Post 11 - WoofyWalkerThanks again! Will keep an eye on his condition and update you all soon.
