Hey Dr. Alex, I've been taking Propecia for about two months now but haven't noticed any significant changes yet. How long does it usually take to see results?

Hello BaldingBob,
Thank you for reaching out! Typically, the effects of Propecia (finasteride) can be gradual and might not be immediately noticeable. Most patients start seeing some hair regrowth around three to six months after starting treatment.
However, it's important to understand that individual results may vary widely based on factors like genetics, overall health, and adherence to dosage instructions. Some people might see significant improvements within a year, while others may need more time or even consider additional treatments if they don't observe the desired outcomes.
Would you mind sharing some more details about your experience? Have you noticed any subtle changes in hair fall or texture?

Thanks, Dr. Alex! I havent really seen much of a change yet. I did notice that my hair doesn't feel as brittle and it seems like there's slightly less shedding now, but the thickness hasn't changed much.

You're welcome, BaldingBob!
Those subtle changes you've noticed are a good sign. Propecia works by inhibiting DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which is the hormone responsible for hair loss in most cases of male pattern baldness. By reducing DHT levels, it slows down further hair loss and can eventually promote new growth.
Since you're only two months into treatment, it's still quite early to evaluate significant results. Here are a few tips that might help:
- Patience: Continue with the medication as prescribed for at least six months to a year before evaluating its full impact.
- Consistency: Make sure you take Propecia consistently every day. Missing doses can reduce its effectiveness.
- Lifestyle Factors: Maintain a healthy diet, manage stress, and avoid smoking or excessive alcohol consumption, which can negatively affect hair health.
If after one year of consistent use, you still don't see satisfactory results, it might be worth discussing alternative options with your healthcare provider.
